How to make money with audio or video podcasts

The following article on making money with podcasting is free for you to use in your lesson as a topic of discussion. There are many words relating to podcasters and online broadcasting that some native English speakers deal with every day without a second thought. But ESL students may not be able to handle more than just 'mp3 downloads' so this is a rich source of vocabulary for them. Get your student to read the article aloud and correct pronunciation.

Can you really make money with podcasts?
Podcasts are taking the world by storm. Who'd have thought that a simple application of a program combined with a portable mp3 player would suddenly have bloggers around the world getting the message out via audio and video.

Do you have your own audio or video podcast?

Making a podcast and broadcasting it online is a great way of getting your 15 minutes of fame, a sense of empowerment and being able to spread your message to the masses.

When the internet was young I used to have downloadable wav files of interviews I'd conducted available for people to hear online. In fact, I've still got a few of them online here

Unfortunately, apart from a few Amazon links, there was no way to make money from the downloads and some free sites couldn't even offer the space to host them.

10 years later and the environment is completely different. Who's heard of wav files? Mp3s are everywhere. Podcasts in Mp3 format is common.

And now websites can make money from a variety of affiliate and associate sources.

But, with the popularity of Itunes, it's now possible for people to download and listen or watch your podcast without ever visiting your website.

It means huge bandwidth bills at the end of the month for you and a little bit of disillusionment when your website traffic doesn't agree with the download traffic.

So what can you do about it?

This article will go into some detail as to how you can make money with your podcast. This article is not for incredibly rich organisations who have huge budgets that they can spend on advertising. This article is for students and hobbyists who are having fun with the technology and who may wish to make a few dollars that could cover their hosting costs.

I'm not promising thousands!!! And any money you make from these systems is reliant on how interesting your podcast and related pages are.

Firstly, it's great that you're getting thousands of people downloading your show every day. I'd be proud as punch if my show was that popular.

Having said that, there's no point in spending money on bandwidth costs if you've got no way of being reimbursed.

If our favourite TV show doesn't get enough people watching, advertising and marketing organisations won't pay for ads and the network won't renew it. A lot of podcasts die within their first year when people realise how much time and money they need to put in with little to gain besides the satisfaction and pleasure of doing it. For many people it gets to be too expensive and they have to stop.

And stopping in the first year is no good either. The first season of a lot of TV programs are sometimes complete rubbish. A lot of shows don't really hit their stride until the 2nd year. This also applies to podcasts and almost any other kind of series, from a new book series to a new band's music releases. I'd like to see a lot of podcasts make it to the 2nd year so I've put this list together covering ways you can hopefully generate enough to cover your hosting and bandwidth costs.

And if you find this article useful, please mention the address 7 times during your podcasts!!! (Okay, maybe once.)

If you're a teacher, these articles can be used to help you create a discussion lesson. Get the students to read an article aloud then discuss some of the vocabulary, phrases, idioms and phrasal verbs used. Discuss the issues that the article has brought up.

If you're a student, any reading is good English practice for you. Read an article on a topic you like then research any vocabulary used. If you didn't agree with what the article says, you can write your own, refuting it!

Have fun!
